SAE DDC 2024 - REGULAR CATEGORY

Introduction and Competition Overview

Team Arrow participated in the SAE DDC 2024 Regular Category with a fixed-wing aircraft specifically designed to tackle the competition’s challenges. Our UAV, weighing under 4 kg, was meticulously engineered for optimal performance, durability, and stability.

Design and Construction

To ensure a lightweight yet robust structure, we carefully selected the following materials:
Aeroply and balsa wood for the primary frame, offering strength without adding excess weight.
Aluminum supports and rods to reinforce the aircraft, enhancing its structural integrity.
Acrylic rods for added durability, improving the aircraft's resistance to impact.

Pre-Competition Preparation

The competition involved multiple stages, starting with pre-event submissions:
We submitted a detailed design report and a fabrication video, demonstrating our engineering process and build techniques.
During the technical presentation, we highlighted:
The rationale behind our material choices.
The aircraft’s unique design features.
How our construction decisions enhanced aerodynamic efficiency and overall performance.
Our well-documented and precisely articulated design earned us 2nd place in the design report category.

Flight Rounds and Challenges

After clearing the technical inspection, we advanced to the flight rounds:
First Flight: Despite our meticulous preparation, the aircraft unexpectedly crashed into the bushes. With quick problem-solving and determination, we repaired the aircraft for a second attempt.
Second Flight: The team successfully completed the flight with a safe and controlled landing, demonstrating the aircraft’s stability and reliability.

Resilience and Teamwork

The competition highlighted our team's:
Resilience: Overcoming setbacks with quick recovery and effective repairs.
Collaboration: Seamlessly working together under pressure.
Problem-solving abilities: Identifying and fixing issues rapidly to ensure a successful flight.

Achievements and Recognition

Our hard work and dedication were rewarded with:
2nd place in the design report category, showcasing our engineering precision and documentation excellence. An overall 4th place finish, marking a significant achievement for Team Arrow.
